I’ve been over in Scotland for about a week now and I’d like to post an update instead of posting one monster post later on. Today I’m going to just talk about the food. I think I missed my stop when I moved to Germany. This is the best food I’ve ever had. I am finally getting a little bit of appreciation for some very cultural/geographic cuisine. In the past food just had a prefix, like German or Mexican. Now it is finally clicking that it isn’t all some junk that you just throw together. If you have food properly prepared as it was intended, then it is delicious. I have not had one bad meal yet, and previous to coming I only heard horror stories about the food. I started with an open mind and it has worked out well for me so far. Now, on to the food.

I think I started out well this week by just sampling some beer and I felt a little timid about some of the food. It just isn’t what I normally eat. Here’s a rundown and quick rating of some of the food….

Fish and Chips – Freaking awesome when it comes from a real chippy.
Sticky Toffee Pudding – Its actually a chocolate cake. I’ve had it 4 times so far.
Battered Prawns – Shrimp do not taste anything here like they do in the states.
Pizza – Tomatoes & Bolegnese sauce. Uh… awesome.
Stella – Great beer in many varieties.
Becks – Both standard beer and Vier are great.
Lamp Chops – Jamie Oliver, the Chef, just opened a restaurant here in Glasgow. The chops were medium rare and I had some chips (wedge fries) along with them. I’ve never liked lamb before, and as it turns out people just can’t cook it correctly.
Haggis – Minced sheep heart, liver, & lungs. Whats not to like. I know this sounds gross, but as I said about keeping an open mind, this is by far the best thing I’ve had so far this week. I actually had Haggis, Neeps n Tatties. Thats Haggis with yellow turnips and potatoes. I’m not kidding, this stuff is great.

But I had a great time in Germany with my family. I took some pictures that I will hopefully put them up in the next few days.

Hey everyone,

I thougt I will fill you in on my vacation here in Germany. I’m sitting in bed right now. I share the bed with Sylwia (its her bed!!!)……I didn’t want to sleep in the gigantic bed in the attic all by myself, so Sylwia made room for me!

The weather is good here, its not too hot, and no humidity at all! When we are not out running around shopping we like to sit outside and have lunch or dinner……I’m actually jealous that we can’t really do that back home because its so humid. We went shopping a couple of times and i bought a few things, I already have two boxes full of german food and candy that I will mail back…………..can’t help it!

My friend Katharina came by yesterday with her 3 kids, they were all very sweet and behaved very well, that’s because they’re german (sorry, american kids are rotten, I see it everyday at work!!!). I plan on seeing a few more friends while I’m here and just enjoy my time with the family!

Btw, my parents are doing good. I think they are very happy that I’m here, and enjoy it as well.

As far as the baby goes, not only do my capri pants not fit anymore but my favorite and only jeans don’t fit either!!!!!!! So i went through Sylwias closet and found two that I can wear for a few more weeks. Also, all my shirts are getting thighter and tighter…..those boobs are growing as well.
I still feel sick sometimes, especially if I go too long without eating and the smell of my prenatal vitamins makes me want to vomit!!!!!

I think this is enough for now. I miss Jon very much and call him every chance I get, but I’m not ready to come home yet….I will be by week 3!

I got a call from Kathy this afternoon. She’s been calling me at about 5-6 EST to tell me that she is going to bed (Germany is 6 hours ahead). This particular evening she had a new development to share with me. She told me that her capri pants would no longer fit!!! Thats right, my size 2 wife who is 13 or so weeks pregnant can no longer fit into her pants. She’ probably up to a size 2.5 now. She seemed ok with it and said that she would be buying some stretchy pants while she’s there.

I know, a big development. We’re going to talk via webcam while she’s there, but I don’t want to see her belly until she gets back on the 4th. I think it will be a more dramatic change for me to not see her for quite a while. I would like to add that we have spent some time apart in the past, but always me traveling away from her. Since she’s pregnant, and she’s the one that is traveling, it seems to be extra rough on me this time. I hope to be able to keep myself sane while she’s gone.

~Jon

If you haven’t heard, my wife and lime sized baby are in Germany. I just got a call from Kathy and she is sitting in her mother’s kitchen. She was eating some kind of spaghetti with gravy of some sort. It may not sound great, but everything that Kathy’s mom makes is excellent.

She’ll be gone for the next 21 or so days… yeah, I know. I’ll be busy for at least the next week. That is about the extent of how long I can keep myself occupied. I plan to finish the drywall, ceiling texture, paint the ceiling, prime the walls (not sure on a wall color yet), set the new cabinets and stove in place, run gas for the stove, finish building the bedroom furniture, rebuild the outdrive and engine in dad’s boat… and thats about it. A pretty slow week .

The boat and furniture will actually stretch over the next couple of weeks, but the kitchen is easily finished in the next week. When Kathy gets home we’ll pick a wall color. She’s not only visiting, but she’s also scouting out wall and floor tile. We’re hoping to import the tile as it is MUCH cheaper in Germany, but the shipping costs offset the savings. Good news: the tile is of a much higher quality and looks much nicer than what you can get for the same amount of money here. We’re excited about it.

Anyway, Kathy still has access to the Internet, so feel free to comment here and she’ll get it. Or email her directly. I’m sure she would be happy to hear from you.

Last comments…

1. The little girl cat, Abby, wouldn’t sleep in the bed last night. She stayed up all night waiting for Kathy.

2. I have a shopping list and I need someone more familiar with the grocery store to pick some things up for me.

3. I hope someone laughed a little at the post title.
